Overview

Join the opening of the National Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar on 11 July — the “three games of men”: wrestling, horse racing and archery — then head west to the wild horses of Khustai, the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai and Erdene Zuu monastery in Kharkhorin.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar

    Airport transfer, city orientation and a welcome dinner.

  2. Day 2: Naadam opening ceremony

    The opening parade at the National Sports Stadium, followed by the first rounds of wrestling and the archery contest.

  3. Day 3: Naadam horse racing

    Drive to the racing grounds outside the city to watch young jockeys race across the steppe.

    Evening wildlife drive to see the takhi, Przewalski’s wild horses.

    West to the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai — a slice of the Gobi in central Mongolia — and a camel ride.

    Erdene Zuu monastery, founded in 1585, and the Kharkhorin museum on the site of the ancient capital Karakorum.

    Drive back east to Ulaanbaatar.
